Companions on the Road (1975) is a fantasy novella by Tanith Lee.
A young mercenary and his two companions ransack a abandoned citadel known for being the home of three sorcerers, two men and a woman. All three died in a fire which wrecked the building. The three thieves take a precious chalice from the ruin, which turns out to be cursed. The two companions are taken out by the vengeful ghosts who follow the three on the road, leaving only the mercenary who is forced to travel without sleeping to escape their wrath, knowing that the time will come when he has to confront them in order to save himself from the fate which befell his friends.
